6 health complications of constipation

Constipation in rare cases is found to cause long-term health problems or complications. This is because treatments for constipation are usually effective, if started quickly after the diagnosis. However, in case of chronic constipation individuals are more at a risk of experiencing various health complications. These usually include:

Hemorrhoids (piles): Straining for bowel movements causes the blood vessels present around your anus to swell resulting in pain, itching and bleeding. They normally settle down after some
days but creams and ointments are available to reduce pain and discomfort.

Fecal impaction: Long-term constipation causes accumulation of hardened stool that can’t be expelled. It causes anal bleeding, swelling of the rectum and loss of sensation around the anal region.

Anal fissure: A hard or large stool causes tiny tears in the anus with bleeding.

Overflow incontinence: Small amounts of soft or loose feces (liquid stools) start leaking out without your knowledge.

Rectal prolapse: Pressuring to have a bowel is found to cause the rectum to stretch and protrude from the anus.

Physiological effects: Pain while having a bowel can lead to fear of going to toilet. Fecal incontinence can be very embarrassing and upsetting especially for children.
